VisitFree Veterans Expeditions at Outward Bound Last Update: 2012/4/20 13:11
Description:
Adventure and challenge, solitude, reflection, and renewal, the wilderness has always symbolized a new beginning - a place for discovery and fulfilling adventure. The Outward Bound program for Veterans provides an opportunity for camaraderie and has proven to be a powerful tool helping veterans readjust after leaving the combat zone.

Through generous funding by the Military Family Outdoor Initiative Project, a joint partnership of The Sierra Club and The Sierra Club Foundation, The Anschutz Family Foundation, and The Disabled American Veterans we are offering fully underwritten Outward Bound programs to Veterans. This is a tremendous opportunity for adventure and self-discovery to our veterans of combat operations in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom). We have over 20 years serving our nation's combat veterans through a long partnership with the Disabled American Veterans organization, where we have offered enriching wilderness expeditions specifically designed for war veterans at no cost to the participants.

Our newest programs offer numerous wilderness adventures exclusively for war veterans, and are fully funded for all participants, to include their roundtrip stateside travel costs between home and the excursion site. Our goals include helping participating veterans build a supportive community with other war veterans; facilitating discussions on readjustment and transition challenges; and re-energizing and reinvigorating our veterans' spirits with adventures and challenges in the beautiful outdoors.

VisitWarriors Remembered Popular Last Update: 2010/1/14 9:47
Description:
WARRIORS REMEMBERED is a 208-page, 11½" x 11½" hard cover photo documentary of Vietnam Veteran Memorials from all 50 states with stories of their significant features, locations and the motivation and struggle faced by those who built them. It highlights 85 memorials and their creators, and shares some of each memorial's subtle details. WARRIORS REMEMBERED is both a travel log and a documentary.

Differing from memorials of other wars, here you will find no white granite generals or parade ground uniforms. Rather these memorials include names of the fallen engraved on black granite, dark bronze fighting men, or the wounded and the nurses who cared for them. Often they reflect the anguish of war and its aftermath. The author is eternally grateful to the selfless warriors and families who created these places of recognition, reflection and "welcome home" and who assisted with this book by sharing their stories.

A portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to the maintenance funds of those memorials still without government sponsorship.

VisitBands of Brothers Last Update: 2012/6/20 12:52
Description:
WE ROCK FOR THOSE WHO SERVED!

Bands of Brothers, a 501(c)3 organization, is dedicated to raising awareness of PTSD, removing the stigma for those that live with PTSD, and funding the treatment of veterans with PTSD.

Every day hundreds of thousands of returning veterans have to face the reality of living their lives with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). But there is no reason they have to face it alone. Bands of Brothers is a non-profit dedicated to letting veterans know there is hope, connecting them with people who can help, and raising money for research and treatment. Capitalizing on the popularity of reality television to reach a large audiance the organization created Bands of Brothers TV. Using the power of music to unite and inspire, twelve returning vets will form three bands. Their cause: to raise awareness and understanding of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and provide support and treatment to their fellow vets living with PTSD. Their mission: to perform an amazing show for a packed house at the renowned World Café Live in Philadelphia. Their challenge: they don't know each other, their songs or what it's like to perform on stage in front of a large crowd. Bands of Brothers TV will follow their story from the time they first meet through the big show. Guided by instructors from the Cherry Hill School of Rock, we will see them master their instruments and overcome the many obstacles that stand between them and a crowd cheering for an encore. There will be surprise challenges along the way as the band-mates get advice from other celebrity musicians, professional stylists, and sound engineers. The winning band will walk away with a prize package and the honor of being the best of the best. But they will all know they have helped the countless men and women who served our country and now need our help.

VisitThe Philadelphia Doo Wop Festival Popular Last Update: 2008/6/17 13:27
Description:
Visit ou website to get date, time, directions, and ticket information.

DooWop is a style of music. It is a derivative of rhythm & blues and jazz. It is known to have started on the east coast of the United States mainly in the urban areas of some of the larger cities. Kids would gather in schools, parks, and on back porches, but mostly in the inner city on the street corner. From Baltimore and D.C to Philadelphia and New York and on up to Boston hundreds and hundreds of groups were being formed. DooWop groups usually consisted of five members, a bass, baritone, two tenors, and naturally a lead singer. The songs were mostly about love, as a new generation was seeking its own identity breaking away from the established music of their parents.

The group harmony sounds of DooWop music exploded on the nation in the mid 1950's, and continued until the English invasion of the 1960's. Many groups and artists born right here in our fair city of Philadelphia came into prominence during this era. Some of our early travelers were, The Castelles, The Hideaways, The Angels, The Re-Vels, The Capris, The Bluenotes, and Teddy & The Twilites. Also The Orlons, Dovells, and The Tymes. We cant forget The Dreamlovers, Anthony & The Sophmores and Billy & The Essentials, and two of our most prominent groups of the era were The Silhouettes, and Danny & The Juniors both making major contributions.

Another city with a rich tradition in group harmony music is Pittsburgh, Pa. Many vocal groups from the Steel City made a mark on the national music scene, but none more prominent than" Jimmy Beaumont and The Skyliners." The group was formed in 1958 in the South Hills section of Pittsburgh. Their sound is a mixture of Pop, Rhythm and Blues and DooWop. Their claim to fame "Since I Don't Have You" a song written by Joe Rock their longtime manager and lead singer Jimmy Beaumont has become one of the finest ballads of all time. Their catalog of songs has kept them a favorite and in the mainstream for forty years. The current configuration consists of Jimmy Beaumont, Dick Muse, Donna Groom, Nick Pociask, and musical director Mark Groom. We are pleased and proud to present them as the "Headliner" at the Philly DooWop festival for 2008.

Today in Philadelphia DooWop is still alive and well. Classified as "Oldies" it is still a viable music genre, and is being kept alive by the many "Disc Jockeys" that still play the music. ACappella Groups, Oldies bands, and even some of the old groups themselves perform regularly in the area, and those kids from the 50's now called "boomers" still enjoy the music. AND SO CAN YOU. On August 9, 2008 DooWop Music will be alive and well, and for a good cause. So let's see your face at the place, your smile in the aisle, and support OUR veterans…SOLID.

VisitAmerican Legion Popular Last Update: 2008/6/16 14:19
Description:
Today there is no accurate record of the total number of veteran's organizations, but among them all, none has grown so large or has exercised such wide influence as The American Legion. None is so intimately identified with the word "veteran".

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, war-time veterans organization, devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is a not-for-profit community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members, men and women, in nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide.
