Bands of Brothers |
Last Update: 2012/6/20 12:52 |
Description:
WE ROCK FOR THOSE WHO SERVED!
Bands of Brothers, a 501(c)3 organization, is dedicated to raising awareness of PTSD, removing the stigma for those that live with PTSD, and funding the treatment of veterans with PTSD.
Every day hundreds of thousands of returning veterans have to face the reality of living their lives with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). But there is no reason they have to face it alone. Bands of Brothers is a non-profit dedicated to letting veterans know there is hope, connecting them with people who can help, and raising money for research and treatment. Capitalizing on the popularity of reality television to reach a large audiance the organization created Bands of Brothers TV. Using the power of music to unite and inspire, twelve returning vets will form three bands. Their cause: to raise awareness and understanding of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and provide support and treatment to their fellow vets living with PTSD. Their mission: to perform an amazing show for a packed house at the renowned World Café Live in Philadelphia. Their challenge: they don't know each other, their songs or what it's like to perform on stage in front of a large crowd. Bands of Brothers TV will follow their story from the time they first meet through the big show. Guided by instructors from the Cherry Hill School of Rock, we will see them master their instruments and overcome the many obstacles that stand between them and a crowd cheering for an encore. There will be surprise challenges along the way as the band-mates get advice from other celebrity musicians, professional stylists, and sound engineers. The winning band will walk away with a prize package and the honor of being the best of the best. But they will all know they have helped the countless men and women who served our country and now need our help.

Free Veterans Expeditions at Outward Bound |
Last Update: 2012/4/20 13:11 |
Description:
Adventure and challenge, solitude, reflection, and renewal, the wilderness has always symbolized a new beginning - a place for discovery and fulfilling adventure. The Outward Bound program for Veterans provides an opportunity for camaraderie and has proven to be a powerful tool helping veterans readjust after leaving the combat zone.
Through generous funding by the Military Family Outdoor Initiative Project, a joint partnership of The Sierra Club and The Sierra Club Foundation, The Anschutz Family Foundation, and The Disabled American Veterans we are offering fully underwritten Outward Bound programs to Veterans. This is a tremendous opportunity for adventure and self-discovery to our veterans of combat operations in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom). We have over 20 years serving our nation's combat veterans through a long partnership with the Disabled American Veterans organization, where we have offered enriching wilderness expeditions specifically designed for war veterans at no cost to the participants.
Our newest programs offer numerous wilderness adventures exclusively for war veterans, and are fully funded for all participants, to include their roundtrip stateside travel costs between home and the excursion site. Our goals include helping participating veterans build a supportive community with other war veterans; facilitating discussions on readjustment and transition challenges; and re-energizing and reinvigorating our veterans' spirits with adventures and challenges in the beautiful outdoors.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund |
Last Update: 2012/3/2 12:48 |
Description:
Based in Washington, D.C., the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) is the nonprofit organization authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1980 to build a national memorial dedicated to all who served with the U.S. armed forces in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, today known as The Wall, was dedicated in 1982. Two years later, the bronze Three Servicemen statue and a flagpole were added to the site on the National Mall. The dedication of the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, to remember and honor the women who served in Vietnam, took place on Veterans Day 1993. The most recent addition to the Memorial site is the In Memory plaque, added in 2004 to honor those individuals who died as a result of the Vietnam War, but whose names are not eligible for placement on the Memorial because of Department of Defense policies. In November 2003, President George W. Bush signed legislation authorizing VVMF to build an underground educational facility near The Wall. The Education Center at The Wall will show the pictures and tell the stories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. It will show some of the more than 150,000 items left at The Wall and celebrate the values exhibited by America’s service members in all wars. Since the dedication of The Wall, VVMF has pursued a mission of preserving the legacy of The Wall, promoting healing and educating about the impact of the Vietnam War. Its activities include: • Organizing individuals on the grassroots level to gather photos of those from their communities whose names are on The Wall and pursue remembrance activities in their towns. All photos and stories collected will be featured in the Education Center when it is built and also shared on VVMF’s Virtual Wall. • Hosting ceremonies on Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day and during the Christmas holidays, which allow the public throughout the year to remember and pay tribute to friends and loved ones whose names are inscribed on the Memorial. • Maintaining the In Memory program that sets aside a day each year to honor those who served in Vietnam and died prematurely as a result of that service, but whose deaths do not fit the Department of Defense criteria for inclusion on The Wall. This includes deaths that may have resulted from exposure to Agent Orange or PTSD-induced suicides. • Developing and distributing comprehensive and balanced educational materials that incorporate the lessons of the Vietnam War era to provide students with a greater sense of responsibility, leadership and global understanding. Materials include: Echoes From The Wall, a multimedia curriculum guide; the Hometown Heroes Service Learning Project, which helps teachers connect with veterans in the community to bring their stories to the classroom; and books of essays, including the latest, Dreams Unfulfilled, which tell the stories of the Vietnam generation. These resources have either been sent to the schools free of charge or are available electronically at no cost. • Providing teacher training focused on the Vietnam War and The Wall through a partnership with the Close Up Foundation and making teachers aware of the free resources available through VVMF. • Coordinating and managing The Wall That Heals touring exhibition, featuring a half-scale replica of The Wall and a museum that takes the Memorial’s healing legacy to communities nationwide. Millions of people have visited The Wall That Heals since its 1996 inception. • Providing the public with an opportunity to learn more about the war, the Memorial and VVMF through our website: www.vvmf.org. The website also contains the Virtual Wall, which features a page for every person whose name is on the Memorial. These pages allow family and friends to share memories, post pictures and connect with each other. • Providing nearly 100 Memorial volunteers with the necessary supplies to continue their useful work of honoring, healing and educating, and hosting an annual appreciation luncheon for these dedicated individuals. • Commissioning Memorial engineering studies, name additions and status changes. • Storing extra granite at Quantico Marine Base and purchasing commercial insurance for the Memorial. • Providing free name rubbings to the public. VVMF is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to honoring our nation’s veterans and educating this and future generations about the impact of the Vietnam War. Gifts from the public and grants from corporations and foundations providing funding for VVMF’s outreach efforts.

Salute, Inc |
Last Update: 2012/3/2 11:50 |
Description:
Our Mission... SALUTE, INC., passionately pursues meeting the financial, physical and emotional needs of the military service members, veterans and their families. We strive to raise awareness of their sacrifices and provide a safety net to ensure every military family is treated with honor and dignity.
The History of SALUTE, INC. SALUTE, INC. was founded in 2003 by Will and Mary Beth Beiersdorf of Arlington Heights, Illinois.
Shortly after 9/11, Will, a Naval Reservist, was called to active duty and deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for thirteen months. The severe financial impact his deployment had on his family came as a startling revelation.
While Will was serving in Cuba, Mary Beth was overwhelmed with the magnitude of what she and their three sons were facing. In addition to the lack of finances, Mary Beth and her children coped with the fear of the unknown and the emotional strain caused by their separation from Will.
With the help, support and outpouring of love from family, friends, their church and their community, they were able to survive. Upon Will's return, both he and Mary Beth felt the need to "give back" by helping others who were experiencing similar hardships.
In 2003, they decided to start an organization whose fundraising efforts would be based around a yearly Memorial Day Family Run/Walk. After sharing their vision with family, friends and pooling their resources, Salute was born!
SALUTE, INC. is now a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides financial support for our military men and women through a variety of fundraising activities.

Quality of Life Plus |
Last Update: 2012/3/2 11:49 |
Description:
Jon Monett, a resident of McLean, Virginia, was inspired to found QL+ after viewing the feature film, Fighting for Life, a documentary directed by Academy Award-winning director, Terry Sanders, and produced by Tammy Alvarez.
Fighting for Life is a powerful, sobering and emotional documentary about American military medicine. It chronicles individual stories of service members as they rehabilitate from injuries sustained in combat; specifically, it follows 21-year-old Army Specialist Crystal Davis from Iraq to Germany to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., as she overcomes the loss of her right leg.
For Mr. Monett, the film highlights the fact that today, fewer people are killed in war, but many more sustain serious injury or loss of limbs. These wounded warriors need dedicated help to overcome the daily challenges of their life-altering disabilities.
The first QL+ Laboratory was dedicated at Cal Poly in March 2009. Here, students from multiple engineering disciplines work under the guidance of experienced faculty members to research and develop innovations to improve the quality of life of those who have served our country.
